About me

My name is John Barry (soon to be Dr John Barry, PhD).

Shortly after I graduated from the University of Sussex (BA Social Psychology) I began training as a therapist. Around this time I was asked to help an A Level student who was in danger of failing having missed several weeks of school due to illness. I didn't feel that I could say no, but the poor student's parents were so pleased with the results that I soon found myself getting phone calls from other parents whose sons and daughters needed help with their Psychology studies. Thus tuition became a sideline to my growing clinical practice.

I started my MSc Health Psychology (University of Westminster) in 2002, and once again found myself being asked to help students, this time on first and second year modules.  At this point I realised that teaching was no longer going to be a sideline for me, but a highly meaningful part of my career as a psychologist. Since this realisation I have become especially interested in developing teaching strategies to help students with concepts in statistics and research methods, because this subject area seems to be responsible for more poor grades and drop-outs than any other subject in Psychology.

Since 2002 I have extended my tutoring to all levels of education. At the time of writing (February 2009) I have very nearly graduated with my PhD (Biological/Health Psychology, City University) and have decided to devote more of my time to my role as psychology tutor and educator. I get immense job satisfaction from helping students, especially those whom might otherwise slip through the cracks in the overstretched university system.

So if you are reading this and wondering whether you might benefit from a session or more of tuition, I suggest you get in touch and we can discuss exactly what I can do for you.
